In a recent heart-wrenching incident that has stirred dog lovers everywhere, two severely neglected dogs were discovered near a university in Ciudad Real, Spain.
These poor animals were found in such a malnourished state that they appeared to be little more than skin and bones.

The distressing condition of the dogs led to their immediate rescue and transfer to a local animal protection center.
Upon arrival, the staff noticed their fur was sparse and nearly nonexistent, revealing their pinkish skin, which suggested they had been kept away from sunlight.

Once at the center, the dogs were given the names Raiz (Roots) and Tierra (Earth). Carme Díaz, a dedicated volunteer at the facility, described their situation as dire.
“They are completely emaciated and have been suffering from hunger for weeks and months. This is the most terrible case I have seen in over 35 years of work,” Díaz shared.

The heartbreaking discovery of Raiz and Tierra stands as a powerful reminder of the urgent need for stronger awareness, stricter laws, and more compassionate action to combat the ongoing crisis of animal cruelty and neglect. Their story highlights a reality that must not be ignored—and a responsibility that society can no longer afford to overlook.

From Misery to Miracles: The Inspiring Rescue and Recovery of Blackie and Reiki
On the night of November 1st, I found myself confronted with a heart-rending situation involving two dogs named Blackie and Reiki.
It began when a woman, who had recently bought a new home, discovered the dogs trapped on the property, which had been abandoned for about a month. During that time, Blackie and Reiki had suffered immense neglect and solitude.
Reiki, appearing more alert, was startled yet intrigued by my presence, seeing a human after so long. Her brother, Blackie, presented an even more distressing sight. He was severely emaciated, his skeletal frame painfully visible.

Bound to a tree, Blackie was unable to move freely, leaving him vulnerable to injury. Despite his dire condition, his cries for help were a moving appeal for comfort and compassion.
The woman surmised that the dogs had been trapped for the entire month since the house was deserted. This realization was heartbreaking. Determined to provide them the care they desperately needed, I rushed them to a veterinarian.
Blackie’s condition was so alarming that it required urgent and compassionate intervention. By the time rescuers found him, he had become dangerously malnourished his body weakened to the point where every rib was visible beneath his fragile skin. On top of this, he was suffering from a severe infestation of ticks and fleas that covered nearly every part of his body, causing constant pain and unbearable discomfort. It was heartbreaking to see how much he had endured, and it was clear that without immediate care, Blackie might not have survived much longer.

Through a crucial blood transfusion and subsequent treatment for his wounds and infections, he began his road to recovery. Reiki, though also in need of care, was in a slightly better state, merely disoriented and hungry.
Once their initial veterinary treatments were finally completed, I brought both dogs home with me, hoping that a safe environment and steady care would help them begin to heal. Yet as the days passed, it became clear that their paths to recovery would unfold in very different ways. Each dog carried unique wounds—both visible and unseen—and watching them navigate their own individual journeys was a reminder of just how deeply trauma can shape an animal’s spirit.
Blackie, driven by hunger from prolonged starvation, ate voraciously as he began to heal. Reiki adapted more quickly, settling into her new surroundings with steady meals and growing trust.

In their first week, Blackie’s progression was slow due to his fragile body, requiring constant attention. Nevertheless, his tenacious spirit was evident, fueling his steady improvement.
In contrast, Reiki transformed with remarkable speed, blossoming into a lively and cheerful little pup almost as soon as she realized she was finally safe. She warmed up to her new surroundings effortlessly, her tail wagging with growing confidence each day. It didn’t take long for her to trust, to play, and to discover joy again—proof of just how resilient a loving heart can be when given even the smallest chance to heal.
After a month, both dogs showed remarkable transformations. Blackie, once malnourished, was now robust and muscular, with a shiny, healthy coat.

His energy was revitalized, and his eyes, once dull, glimmered with happiness. Reiki thrived as a loving and joyful companion, reveling in her newfound life.
Witnessing the dramatic changes in Blackie and Reiki has been inspirational. Their resilience and the healing power of love and care underscore the significance of rescue efforts.
Their journey from suffering to joy highlights the profound impact compassion can have on animals in distress. I am grateful to have been part of their transformation, knowing these two wonderful dogs have a bright future ahead.
